PowerCross Recap

Our friends at MaxPower Cycling hosted a new event for the local CX scene this past weekend and by all reports, it went off really well with hopes it becomes a regular spot in the local cx calendar.  Two words seemed to describe the primary challenges of the course ... hill and mud.  A loooooong hill (Faso Hill?) and some crazy, sticky mud made for a really challenging event.

The Masters field saw Ommegengster friends Dave F and Jeff W gunning it out for top honors while the Ommegangsters present all jumped into the Open Mens field.  Skinny Phil with perhaps one of his best rides of the year finished 5th in a really strong field of 45 or so racers with Dave Y also in a top 10 spot with 7th..  Adam L, Jason H, and Ray W also had really good showings with all in the top 20 showing some late season form.  Nice work gents !!

The seasons a winding down but still some nice representation by Team Ommegang - Syracuse Bicycle.

DPM KX .... the old(er) dudes rock

A brisk yet beautiful morning saw eleven (yes 11) Ommegangsters descend upon the cool little village of Greene, NY this past Sunday for the Dave Panella Memorial Cyclocross race (or DPM KX for short!).  The new venue for the DPM KX in Greene offered up lots'o turns and twists on a mostly grass course.  One set of triple (or should I say Tripel) barriers featured the only forced dismount of the day while the rest of the course mostly tested your "driving" skills on a variety of off cambers, tight turns and yup .. a spiral of death.

So the old(er) dudes (the Masters Men... although I find it hard to lump a 35 yr old into the "old dudes" category) rolled out first with the 35+, 45+ and 55+ categories up for grabs featuring a total of 9 podium spots.  When the dust settled (and/or the mud dried), there were Ommegangsters on 6 of the 9 podium spots for the Masters which included 3 firsts.  Dave Y, AJ F, and Skinny Phil confiscated the 35+ podium while Drumroll, King Karl and Paul S each reached podium spots in the 45+ and 55+ fields.    Gordon S, showing some late season reserves also had a decent showing in the masters field.  A bonus to all finishers was a big boy bottle of some tasty Ommegang.

While most of the "old dudes" hobbled about, applied Ben Gay, whined about their aches and pains ... ok, actually they mostly went directly to the Ommegang recovery beverage and spread of food, the Open Men started with Ommegangster pal Tim O putting on a dominating show.  Dave Y (one of the younger "old dudes") did double duty and ended up 3rd in this race after winning the 35+.  Mike K, Jeremy K, Jason H and Ray W all rode well while sporting the Omme colors.

A wacky relay race followed the Open Mens event which saw teams of two riding the CX course as ell as drinking a brew and jumproping as part of the "rules".

All in all another great day of racing with Dave Panella surely looking down on us with a grin while shaking his head at the fun and foolishness we all call cyclocross.

Greene CX & New England Action

After a year off, Greene CX was back....and so was that damn hill.  The course followed fairly familiar territory with a few modifications to account for the improvements and construction work at the school.  The familiar parts included the (sorta) 1/4 pipe down along the road, the sections twisting on the lower side lawn, the grassy section out to the "back" and then that damn hill.  The notable change to the hill (aka the wall of death) was steps cut into the steepest portion along the right hand side of the trail/path.  The strong leaders were able to ride the hill while most mortals had to get off and run/walk/collapse up the hill.  The course then popped out along a field and snuck back around the school with lots of techy twists and (you know it if ya know the King) ... a spiral (or was it a spiroval?).
The Masters went off first with Dave Y and Jason H finishing 1st and 3rd in the 35+ group.  In the 45+ group Drummroll finished behind that Dave guy (yet again!) for 2nd.    King Karl finished 3rd in a pretty stacked 55+ group.  It was also good to see Ommegangster Gordon S out racing w/the 35+ Masters as well with a respectable showing.
The Open men's group saw Dave Y (who apparently didn't leave it all out there in his first race in the 35+ group) finish 2nd with Ommegangsters Mike K and Jeremy K also "representing" in the open race.
Further east in Northampton, MA, Skinny Phil as the lone Ommegangster jumped into 2 days of racing at the Cycle-Smart event.  Skinny noted that the New England fields are stacked with some strong dudes.

Wicked Creepy in VT -- NYS Champs at Parma

Yet again the Ommegangsters spread across the upstate
landscape to represent and fly the Ommegang colors
on a Halloween weekend with some brisk weather that
seemed oh so cyclocross.  In fact one Ommegangster
went across state lines into neighboring Vermont to
participate in the Wicked Creepy CX event.    Jeremy K
reported the course just on the outskirts of Bennington
was mostly dry with the VT edition of this NYCross.com
series race again showing a pretty high level of
competition.

Out past the western edges of Rochester, the NYS CX Champs were held at the Parma Town Park with good Ommegangster representation across the various race categories.    At the end of the day, Ommegangsters had a silver in the 35+, a bronze in the 45+ and a silver and bronze in the 55+ for the state championships.  Some Ommegngster friends did well too with some hardware haul (Kim B, Dave F, Wayne B and Tim O) so we want to give a shout out & congrats to them to them as well.   The Parma event was also the final race in the 3 event series hosted by Full Moon Vista.  Fast Fred H won the series overall for the 3/4 category and Drummroll held onto a 3rd overall in the 45+ category for the series.

Again another great weekend with some more excitement on "tap" (pun intended) for the upcoming weekend.  Some of the 'gangsters are headed to race with the big boys in Mass while another batch will head down to the King's Greene event.   Hope to see ya out there.
