PowerCross & GobbleCross

PowerCross was recently hosted up in the Syr-a-burb of Van Buren by our friends from The MaxPower Cycling Team.   The course was a little different in it's second season with the dreaded "Faso Hill" being revised so it was just plain painful rather than causing potential cardiac issues.  With a race in the back yard of many of the Syracuse area team members, good results and representation were in order with some respectable results and a couple podium spots.

GobbleCross, also in a Syr-a-burb, brought a little post T-giving racing fun down on the Hadzor Ranch in Lafayette if you were not inclined to do the Black Friday shopping thing.  Dan T showed and dominated all while others went a bit more towards the having fun route and rode with their kids or on MTBs.  Good peeps, good brews and good times seemed to be the consensus.

Next up -- Bikes & Brews at Syracuse Bicycle on December 15 from 6 to 9 pm.  This will allow you to cut straight to post 'cross race recovery beverages and goodies without having to visit the pain cave for 45-60 minutes and then clean mud out of your teeth & britches.  Admission is an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots program.

The Greene Machines & Bethlehem Boys

Green Machines:  After posting some stellar results at the Greene CX event at the Greene school, the following weekend saw a batch of Ommegangsters heading back down to Greene for the Dave Panella Memorial CX (or KX if you prefer) event held almost across the street from the prior weekend's race at the school.   And much like the week before at the school, Ommegangsters picked up wins in the 35+, 45+ and 55+ Masters fields.

Bethlehem Boys:  While some headed down towards the Southern Tier, another batch of Ommegangsters headed out towards the Capital District to test themselves at the Bethlehem Cup (the last event in the NYCross.com series).  The results show a top 10 in the huge 3/4 field and a first and third in the 35+ Masters group.

Again another great weekend of results.  Way to go gents!

Greene-ery

A host of Ommegangsters headed down to the school yard in Greene for some CX lessons this past Sunday.  While the setting was definitely a school yard, the key players were more from the set of Camelot (or Harry Potter if you are still racing the open rather than a masters category).  First and foremost, we had the King Faruzel holding court in his, shall we say, Kingdom.  Next we had plenty of warriors, a healthy number of jesters (aka hecklers), a few damsels, and then the esteemed guru (aka Dan T).

For the Ommegangsters, a great set of results with respective wins in the 35+, 45+, and 55+ categories.   In fact the 35+ masters group saw the top 4 spots all go to Ommegangsters.  And in the open event, with a clinic on display by Guru Timmerman, the Ommegangsters held their own with some respectable finishes.

Greene results here:   http://www.bikereg.com/Results/2011/11/06-Greene-Cross.asp

And while many of the boys played here locally, Fast Freddie went all NoHo on us and jumped into the action in the big pond of the Verge Series.   In the end, a respectable result after wading his through the huge field of 136 from the back half to make it to the front half.

Northhampton results here:  http://www.bikereg.com/Results/2011/11/06-21st-Annual-Cycle-Smart-International.asp

On tap this weekend (plz note the brew humor):  Bethlehem & DPM -- get to it as it will be all gone before you know it.

A Bike Shop Weekend full of 'Cross

First on the slate, the inaugural Syracross cx event held on Saturday
at Highland Forest right here in the outer Syracuse 'burbs this past Saturday.
Our bike shop/brew brothers at Mello Velo put on a kick-@ss event. A great
course, a post race keg of Middle Ages, WoolSports swag, and a bone warming
fire set a perfect race vibe. The Ommegangsters showed up in force with some
pretty incredible results. Podium sweep in the 35+ and top podium spots in
the Cat 4, 45+ and 55+ along with 2 'gangsters in the top 5 of the open men.
A big congrats to the MV dudes for a successful event with a consensus
that hopes are this race becomes a regular on the calendar.

On Sunday, a handful of Ommegangsters headed to Rochester for the Park Ave
event including a couple 'gangsters that were doing the back-to-back double
after racing on Sat.
Again some pretty decent results across the various categories. Great to
see Jim R catching the 'cross bug and posting better results each week.
Nice work gents!

Tripel

Tripel your pleasure?  Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle 'cross racers were working it at 3 separate 'cross venues this past weekend with some great results.   West Point, Parma and Saratoga were the venues with Ommegangsters taking top honours in their respective divisions at West Point and Parma.

King Karl picked up the top spot in his division at West Point while Aaron J did the same at Parma.  Ommegangsters also picked up some additional podium photo ops at Parma as well.  Spa racers also represented well in some pretty sizeable fields and a reportedly challenging course.  Nice work gents.

All results are at BikeReg:    Saratoga   West Point   Parma

Syracross up next at Highland in our backyard hosted by our Mello Velo friends -- let's represent!

Troy, Syracuse, and more Troy

With the CX season in full swing, this past weekend brought about a couple racing options on the local scene.  The two-day NYCross.com event in Troy and the Syracuse Grand Prix on Sunday.  Some split their Sat & Sun between the two, some did just Troy and others did just the Syracuse event.

All in all a great weekend all around with some of the Ommegangsters picking up some podium style accolades while may others placed well in some pretty stacked fields.  The Troy events saw Skinny Phil, Ray W, Tim O, Jeremy K, and King Karl in attendance on one or both days while a strong showing at Syracuse included Jason H, Aaron J, Jim R, Greg D, AJ F, Fred H, K I, Joe Mag, Skinny Phil, and Tim O.

The Troy events reportedly featured some new twists and turns which was also the theme at Syracuse as they too sported a revamped course and perhaps one of the muddiest editions in memory. A bonus at Syracuse in the P/1/2/3 race was getting to see Dan Timmerman in action -- the dude makes it look too easy.

Coming up regionally this weekend .... again choices .... Parma/Rochester or Saratoga?   Either way your likely to see some Ommegangsters there.  Good luck to all.

Cobbs Hill, Iron Cross & A Charity Ride

A good batch of Ommegangsters headed off to Rochester to take on Cobbs Hill this past Sunday.    Upon arrival, a course pre-ride revealed that the course seemed a bit shorter with the crazy lllloooonnnggg hill climb being only about half of what it had been in previous editions.   With a few days of no precip prior and temps also pushing over 70 degrees on race day,  it made for a pretty fast course.

Ommegangsters posted some great results with Aaron J picking up the win in the Cat 4 race (it's about time to upgrade isn't it?) and Tim O missing the win by a whisker in the 35+.   There were also some pretty good performances by a number of others with respectable placings.

A lone Ommegangster, perhaps using some of is IronMan Lake Placid base, headed down to PA to participate in IronCross. Here's "K's" race report:

I just came back from Iron Cross, and just wanted to say the race was
a BLAST. It was the funnest race I've done, by far, and the scenery
was stunningly beautiful! If you like Rambler, you MUST do this race.
The course is just like Rambler: a mixture of pavement, dirt roads,
gravels, single track trails, and mud, except there are more climbing,
and the course is twice is long (60miles), ... and it's sunny and dry.
Oh, and there is a long, long, walk-up which they call "hike-a-bike"
or something. There are a few short sections where you would want a
Mt. bike but the course definitely favors CX bikes. (I wouldn't be
able to shoulder my 29er for the long hike-up anyway.) I think CX
bikes with disk brakes are the ideal (Joe???).

The only downside(?) I found were 1) the start/finish was at a state
park, so it's strictly no alcohol :-( and 2) the mass start is very
congested, so if you want to race, you have to start from the front,
otherwise, you will loose good 5 mins by mile 2; and 3) the burritos
they served were amazingly bad.

I got a flat 10 miles to go, only to find I brought a 20 year-old tube
with 7 patches on it (, which apparently didn't hold air), but thanks
to the neutral support, I got a brand-new tube and managed to finish
the race. Still enjoyed the every minute. Given my fitness and
handling skills, I would never want to "race" it, but definitely would
love to do it again.

While there was racing scheduled for Sunday (as noted above), a batch of Ommegangsters participated in the Trek Womens Breast Cancer Awareness Ride put on by Syracuse Bicycle the day before on Saturday.  While these events were held nationwide by Trek retailers, the Syracuse event somehow arranged for a beautiful fall day with a sunny 70+ degrees which only added to the festival atmosphere.  Some Ommegangsters hung with the family on the 10 mile route while others pushed the pace in the flat 25 mile ride.  As a nod to the cause and show the team's support for the event, all Ommegangsters present sported hot pink socks.

Syracuse Bicycle put on a first class event with tons of food, bountiful swag and draw prizes and an incredible good karma vibe.  While official word has yet to be received,  the Syracuse ride was most likely the largest ride in the U.S. with over 400 participants.   Huge props and congrats go out to Syracuse Bicycle.

CX @ Brewery Ommegang 2011

Phew, another one in the books ... where to begin? .... Maybe start out by hoping all the racers, volunteers, and spectators have got all (or most) of the mud out and off their bikes, bodies and clothing.  The mud certainly made the race a whole different beast than previous editions .. maybe even a little more Belgian-esque?

First we need to give a hearty shout out to the racers for coming out and making the event a success.  Next, a big thanks to the many behind the scenes helpers that sacrificed their time and efforts in those critical "little" things like course set-up & teardown, registration, scoring, and various other aspects that get overlooked -- without these folks, there would be no event.  We also need to thank our supporters that included a few new faces and some that have been with us from the beginning.  It was an honour to welcome our new supporters Chobani and WoolSports -- both these folks totally mesh with the CX scene.  It was also a pleasure to have Endurance Factor and Road ID  supporting us again this year.  We also need to give props to our musical guru William Nicholson who provided the proper post race, recovery beverage enjoying vibe.  Lastly, we owe a huge amount of gratitude to Syracuse Bicycle and Brewery Ommegang for their support of our team as well as to this event.  We've probably forgot some folks in our post race delirium but we want to say thanks to all and everyone that had a hand in this event.

There's lots of pictures and some vids (and links thereof) at various FaceBook pages including those of Team-Ommegang Syracuse Bicycle, Syracuse Cycling and Central NY Cyclocross.

Ellison Park & Swandrome

The Ommegangsters spread out this past weekend for some CX action with some headed towards Rochester for some Sat and/or Sun fun at Ellison Park while some headed towards Ithaca to the iconic Swandrome.   Lot's of racers in lots of divisions with some strong results and podium action including Tim O and AJ F winning their respective divisions.

Pre-reg for CX @ Brewery Ommegang looking real strong -- should be bigger, badder (and quite possibly muddier) than previous events -- hope you can make it out to race or spectate and (if you're >21) enjoy a nice Belgian style recovery beverage).

Mom, Apple Farms and Cyclocross

Chances are if you are one of the 3 or so people who happen to read this here blog, you too are probably a little different than the norm so you'll understand why we have foregone the old "mom, apple pie & baseball" adage and revised it a bit.

This weekend saw two race 'cross venues held at apple farms.  Johnny Appleseed would be proud.  The Critz Farms Kermis was held on Sat in Cazenovia, NY while the Apple Farm in Victor, NY was held on Sunday.  At both events, the Ommegangsters posted some great results with a number of guys making the podium.

Kirkland (aka His Father was a Mudder! His Mother was a Mudder!)

A true Mudders delight at Kirkland this past Sunday.  While maybe not the muddiest CX event in memory according to a few vets, it certainly made the top 5 list of many.  In some regards it was a bit of a surprise considering this was the first 'cross race of the year for most when, aside from some wet grass from the morning dew, things are generally relatively dry in mid/early Sept.

Even more evident than the mud was the number of Ommegangsters there to taste some 'cross.  Around 15 of the gang showed up to race with a handful trying their hand at 2 races.   The results sheet shows a number of Ommegangster podium spots across varying categories with many showing some real nice results considering the size & depth of the fields.  Props also go out to Syracuse Bicycle's Trish D for her win at her first CX event as well as a nod to Stuey F (son of Ommegangster Ray F) for his win in a jr. category.

Pics can be linked from the FB page of Central NY Cyclocross

Hope to see folks at Critz Farms for some unique CXish type action this Sat.  The bonus/incentive (besides a great grassroots event) is they are officially opening their tasting room for the Harvest Moon Cidery!

Can't Keep Up

Yup, can't seem to keep up it seems as of late.  Just too much -- both on the bike & the team blog & team facebook page, etc, etc.

So here's a supafast recap.  The Syracuse Bicycle Point to Pint ride to Brewery Ommegang was a success.  It was 90 miles of tough love for the 20 some riders but the brews & munchies at the end helped forget about all those rolling hills.

While some rode to Cooperstown, a few went up to Oswego for the Tour de Loop.  Some great Ommegangster results with Aaron J representing very well with a 2nd in his age group in the 50 miler (& congrats to Omme-alumnus Craig N for the win) while Sean B (1st age group) and Dave M (2nd age group) represented in the 30 miler.  Also props to friend Bryan B for his 3rd overall.
Results here:  http://www.yellowjacketracing.com/2011

And if that wasn't enough, Dan the Plan went to the Capital District race as well and represented.  Results here:  http://www.bikereg.com/Results/2011/08/20-Capital-Region-Road-Race.asp

The last bit of news is registration is open at BikeReg.com for the Critz Farms Kermis on 9/17 and CX @ Brewery Ommegang on 10/2.

3 Days on the Road & An Afternoon in the Woods

3 days on the road describes the 3 stage Tour of the Catskills.  Starting Friday eve with a TT followed by two pretty serious days of climbing (Devil's Kitchen anyone?), throw in one of the largest overall fields in New York State and you have the 2011 edition of the Tour of the Catskills.
A couple Ommegangsters in the form of Ray W and Dan F headed down to the three day event and posted some respectable results against some not so surprisingly really strong fields.

Catskills results here:  http://www.tourofthecatskills.com/the-race/

With some Ommegangsters down on the roadways of the northern Catskills, a few others stayed a bit closer to home to play in the woods at the Highland Forest Classic MTB race which included Jason H, Tim O (a week after the Wilderness 101), Joe M, Aaron J and Greg D.
The course was pretty typical Highland conditions (a bit damp and slick in spots) after some rains earlier in the week.  In the end, the Ommegangsters fared rather well on the results sheets with a 4th, a 2nd, and 3 winding up first in their respective categories.

Highland Results here:  http://bikeloft.com/merchant/257/files/2011BikeLoftHighlandClassicResults.pdf

While there still is plenty of road racing left (not to mention the Syracuse Bicycle Point to Pint Ride to Brewery Ommegang fun ride on Aug 20) some are already getting the cyclocross twitch.  In fact, there's even a free CX clinic being put on by Syracuse Bicycle and Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle on Aug 28 at Longbranch Park in Liverpool.  Details forthcoming but get it on your calendar if interested.

Long Days

A couple Ommegangsters decided to head out for some long endurance type sufferenjoyment in the form of the Wilderness 101 MTB race (as in 101 miles) while another tackled a fairly well know triathlon called IronMan USA (as in 2.4 mi swim, 112 mi bike, 26.2 mi run).

Fred H and Tim O participated in the 101 down in State College, PA with some great results (especially considering Tim had a slew of mechanicals).  Both finished within the top 50 of a field of almost 200 finishers.

While the MTB boys were spending 7-8 hours in the saddle in the woods, Ommegangster "K" was up Lake Placid way "only" spending 5 hrs and 44 min on the bike .. after a 2.4 mile swim.  And when the bike was over, he put in a sub 4 hr marathon for a damn respectable IM result.

NYS TT Champs

Two Team Ommegang - Syracuse Bicycle members in the form of AR & Dan the Plan headed down to the southern tier for a little state TT champs action just a tick north of the PA border.  Nothing like 40k of eye-ball bleeding, tongue dragging and drooling in the pain cave to add to a summer weekend of fun.  When the eyeballs cleared up and the drooling (mostly) stopped, we had AR sporting a silver medal in his division and Dan the Plan painfully close to a bronze only to be edged out by 1.5 seconds (ending up 4th of 19 in the largest and possibly the most competitive field mind you).

A big congrats to both gents -- way to go Ommegangsters!

Ketchup

It's been a while so time to ketchup.  A few weeks back some Ommegangsters snuck off and did the Strawberryfest Race down in the southern tier end of things.  Some respectable results posted across the various race cats with AJ F pulling top podium step honors in the 35+ division.

Then not quite as far back as Strawberryfest, more Ommegangsters popped down a bit south of Syracuse for the AVRE Race for Sight.  Eric K provided a race report shown here:

The race started at 10am and the temperature must have been in the 80s.  I stood in the shade as long as possible before the start.  There wasn’t much of a neutral start, we almost immediately hit 25mph.  There were a couple of short breaks in the first 10 miles.  None of them worked because the peloton was doing nearly 30mph with a huge tail wind.  I basically sat in for the first of two 20 mile loops.  I watched carefully at the KOM lines that we would pass again at miles 30 and 36.  The first part of the second lap was a lot like the first with multiple break attempts in a tail wind.  Both AJ and Karl helped bring back the break right around the 30 mile mark.  I tried to get into a good position for the first KOM (about 5% grade for almost 0.5miles).  I ended up getting to the base of the climb around 10th position and started my attack.  The problem was Michael Grygus was already about 5 seconds in front of me.  I caught up to his wheel thinking he is going to crack at any second and I would be the first to the KOM.  As we neared the KOM it was clear Michael wasn’t going to give up easily.  I pushed even harder thinking I could edge in front of him.  He finally noticed me on his wheel and gave one final effort to beat me to the line.

After the first KOM I looked back and noticed most of the field was together about 20 seconds behind.  I sat up and let them catch me because most of the course was downhill and I wasn’t going to be able to stay in front of them.  Again another break formed, AJ and Karl once more went to the front and helped bring them back.  I spent most of the time trying to get back in position for the next KOM.  There was a lot of jockeying to get up front.  I ended up getting bumped into at least three times.  Nothing I would worry about in a CAT 3 race but in a citizen’s race you never know if the other rider is used to getting bumped into.  As we neared the second KOM I was following AJ at the front on the yellow line as I noticed some strong guys moving up on the right shoulder.  AJ moved towards the middle of the road giving me a clear line and I knew I had to jump before anyone else this time.  I went all out for a good 20 seconds.  I was sure I dropped everyone by attacking early.   Right before I was about to crack I peaked underneath my bike and saw a single shadow drafting me.  It ended up being Jeremy W, and he passed me right before the line.  He must of been on my wheel when I started my attack.  Again I had taken second on the KOM.

The next three miles went by pretty fast without too much to comment on.  In the final mile there was a very slight uphill which bunched the riders together.  Right in front of me I heard some screaming and the next thing I knew there were two guys crashing.  I moved to avoid them as much as possible.  I somehow got by but I was now sitting around 20th before the final climb.  I was able to pass about 5 people before the base of the climb.  The finishing climb reminds a lot of the Binghamton crit finish, but longer.  The entire finishing climb was open for the riders to use so I immediately jumped far left.  I got all the way up to fourth position but the climb went a little further than I thought.  I ended up getting passed by another rider right before the finish and ended up fifth overall.

We averaged about 24mph for 40 miles.  All of the corners were well managed.  It was a well run and fun race!

Other matters:  For our third year now, Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle is headed to the brewery for an informal group ride around Otsego Lake July 30 (the morning of the BCTC event).  We'll hopefully have some brewery staff joining us as well as some local riders as in the past.

The Syracuse Bicycle Point-to-Pint Ride to Brewery Ommegang is coming together.  It is up on BikeReg.

We also have some cool things brewing for the CX @ Brewery Ommegang event (Oct 2) as well.  The brewery has stepped up even bigger for 2011 so stay tuned.

Stay Cool.

Summer Time

Seems as summer officially begins and June winds down, so does alot of the local racing.  There's still some here & there but not your typical choice of two (or maybe more) events over a weekend within an hour or two's drive.  It's almost as if the local/regional "scene" (if you will) heads into another chapter of the race season.  Maybe it's triathlon season?  ..or pre-cyclocross prep season? ... or just time to ride until 8:30 pm while we have the daylight and can comfortably ride in short sleeves.

Perhaps the "close" of the first chapter of the race season ends with the Owasco Flyer ... a race many from the area might consider one of the "local classics".    While a few of Ommegangsters lined up at the Corning Circuit race held at the (way cool) Watkins Glen speedway on Saturday eve, a number of Ommegangsters also jumped into the madness of this short but aggressive non-USAC race the following day.  In the end, some decent results over this weekend with yet again some good representation.  Results here:

Owasco:  http://www.owascoflyer.com/Race_Results.html
Corning:  http://www.bikereg.com/Results/2011/06/25-Corning-Circuit-Race.asp

Despite the race calendar getting a little lighter, there's a few cool Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle related things on the summer "to do" list.
(1) BCTC informal group ride at Brewery Ommegang July 30.
(2) The Syracuse Bicycle Point to Pint Ride to Brewery Ommegang on Aug 20.

The informal BCTC ride is open to all; we generally do a loop of Otsego Lake (sometimes with brewery folks) around mid-morning.

The Point to Pint Ride will be announcing more details on the event soon as we finish pulling those pesky little details together.  A tentative route has been chose to include a start in Fayetteville on Rte 5 at Sun Chong's TKD School, Rte 5 to Chittenango, Rte 13 thru Caz onto New Woodstock and then Rte 80 almost all the way to Cooperstown.  Stay tuned, more details to come.

Wilmington/Whiteface 100K – Leadville Qualifier

Five Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle teammates headed up to the WW100K mountain bike race over the weekend. This was the first year they’ve held the race, and it was the first in a series of three races designed as “Leadville 100” qualifiers. For those unfamiliar with the Leadville 100, it’s become something of a legendary race in recent years as Lance Armstrong has competed in it. Basically Leadville is a mostly non-technical 100 mile bike race with lots of climbing at altitude. The WW100K was designed to be something of a mini-me to Leadville.

It turned out to be less than 100K at 56+ miles, but it did have 6,560ft of climbing. There was a healthy mix of road, dirt roads, and some single track. Did I mention there would be a lot of climbing?

Myself, Greg Drumm, Jason Haight, Fred Harle and Tim O’shea made the trip. Sign in was early the day before the race, so we left for Lake Placid at the crack of dawn so we could arrive by 9:30am. We signed in, and hung out for the racers meeting, where they told us that the first 99 finishers would earn a WW100K belt buckle. I knew I wasn’t planning to go to Leadville, but I also knew that I wanted one of those belt buckles.

After the racers meeting we suited up to pre-ride part of the course. For good or bad we pre-rode the last four miles which included the more difficult single track and some serious “hike a bike” up Whiteface. By serious, I mean that in roughly two miles we’d climb from 1,110 feet to 2,750 feet. Even the decent to the finish was far from a picnic. That said, it’s worth mentioning that I’m not much of a mountain biker and just bought a new ride this year. I’m definitely getting my monies worth this summer.

After the pre-ride, we were off to the hotel, hung out by Mirror Lake, ate some dinner, drank one, and only one, of Lake Placid Brewery’s finest and went to bed early. The race start was going to be at 6:30 (now I know how you triathlete’s feel). 6:30am is a good time to start a bike ride, but an early start for a bike race.

At 6:30 the shotgun went off. The front of the race went hard from the gun and the field instantly split into two large groups. A handful of us buried ourselves to bridge the gap. Not exactly how you want to start a long race, but it had to be done. As we hit the first dirt climb, much of the field came back together, but a group of roughly nine got off the front. A guy in front of me lost his momentum, stopped pedaling, and I tried to weave around him but ended up off the bike myself. At that point, Tim was in the group of nine, and I lost contact with Greg and Fred while frantically trying to remount my bike. Both of them were still in sight as we flew down a rocky decent. Half way down the decent I hit a sharp rock in what seemed like super-slow-mo. We’ve all been there. You see something coming at the last minute. You hit it, wince and then hold your breath hoping that you don’t hear air rushing out of the tire and the sound of rim on rocks. It wasn’t my lucky day, so only 30 minutes into the race I was pulling out my only spare tube.

I told myself to work slowly but efficiently with the tire change. Tough to do as the whole field is whipping by. As I was making the change, I smacked a mosquito on my leg. Sadly I had gotten to him too late and he had already notified every other mosquito within a two mile radius that there was fresh blood hanging out on the side of the trail. As a swarm of mosquito’s threatened to carry me away, I started working much faster. All in all, the GPS data indicates that I spent just under five minutes on the side of the trail. I wish I could say it had been 50 minutes based on my finishing time, but the GPS doesn’t lie. I hopped back on my bike and began the process of picking people off. It was a little disheartening to know that I’d pretty much be riding on my own at this point. Most of the people riding my initial pace would be long gone. I kept telling myself that maybe I’d catch someone I could work with, but I’d lost a little mental steam. That said, the belt buckle was still foremost on my mind so I kept pushing.

At this point, much of the race went by in a hazy blur. It was sort of an out and back with a loop on the way out, so I just put my head down on the climbs and kept my eyes wide open on the fast descents. At one point in no-man’s land on a rapid descent, I saw a long thick trail of dust. I started wondering if I was going to catch someone, or if I’d stumbled on an out of work “Smoke Monster” from the TV show Lost. Rumor has it that a number of the smoke monsters are roaming the country side while waiting for further serious acting work or even ironic cameo’s on sketch comedy shows. I started pondering whether or not the smoke monster would judge me as being consumable or not. Frankly I never really understood Lost, so I’m not sure if being taken by a smoke monster was even good or bad. It’s amazing where the mind goes in an endurance race, but thankfully the “smoke monster” just turned out to be another racer tearing down the course.

As the race went on, I started to feel some leg cramps coming on. As many people know, my real passion is cyclocross. Cyclocross races last about an hour. That sounds like just the right amount of suffering to me. So at roughly three and half hours my legs started to cramp up. I knew that I could make myself an electrolyte drink at the rest stop before the final push up Whiteface, but I still had to get there. I started to hemorrhage time but pushed on. Everyone around me seemed to be in a similar state anyway, and misery loves company. At the stop, I filled my bottle, dropped in an electrolyte tablet, took half of a PBJ “to go” and hit the single track. By the time I hit Whiteface, the race was unfolding at 2-3mph. There was a group of us, and we were walking most of the accent and riding when we could. I caught a handful of people and got dropped by one. Getting dropped at 3mph is tough. You can see it happening, but the body or mind simply won’t cooperate to respond. A few of us laughed the uncomfortable laugh of death row inmates as we saw a sign indicating 1K to the top of the mountain. We knew we were in trouble, but there was no sense in complaining, so we just enjoyed what we knew was in front of us. The finish.

At the top, a rapid decent started. One of the guys that I’d been alternating spots with crashed in front of me. He was fine and I pressed on, white knuckling it. I came across the woman that would finish in third. Her brakes were fried and she was walking down. I think sweet, if I was a woman I’d be doing really well. Then I remembered I’m a dude, and a mediocre one at that, so I’d better keep moving. I started to think that there’s no chance that I’m getting that belt buckle. Kind of an odd goal to have, but they had put the carrot out there and it had become my motivation. As I neared the finish line, they announced that roughly 80 people had finished. I was tired, bummed about my overall performance, but REALLY happy that I’d be getting a belt buckle. Frankly the belt buckle will probably never see the light of day from the box it came in, but it would have been a long drive home without it for some reason.

The rest of the team did great. Tim O’Shea came in 9th after getting a flat that took over 12 minutes to repair. Fred Harle had a really strong ride in his first MTB race on a borrowed bike for 28th. Greg Drumm had a really strong ride on a bike with a rigid fork and only 8 gears for 31st. Father of two, full time school teacher and all around good guy Jason Haight finished very well in 59th, and . . . well . . . I won a belt buckle, so who’s counting!

We all hung out, soaked our tired legs in the cold water rolling off of the mountain and shared our race stories. Everyone had a different race and a different story, which is what makes this sport beautiful. Good time, great race and when it was all done we went to the Lake Placid Brewery to, uh, recover.

All Over the Empire

Ommegangsters spread out all over the Empire State this past weekend and posted some pretty sweet results.

Where were we?  Brooklyn, Inlet, Saranac Lake, Wilmington and the Buffalo area.  Dave B with a top 10 in  Brooklyn at Prospect Park, a batch at Black Fly in Inlet (see previous post) with lots of top 10, Eric G with a silver & bronze at the NYS crit champs in Saranac Lake, Eric K with a top 10 at the Wilmington-Whiteface RR, and Jim R at the Hamburg RR out near Buffalo.

Most results are here:  http://www.bikereg.com/results/2011/

All in all a great weekend for the team with one big exception.  If you look at the Hamburg results, you'll see Jim R without a designated finishing spot or result.  That is because he unfortunately got brought down in the sprint which earned him a trip to the ER/urgent care.  Sadly he has the requisite road rash but the real damage was to his wrist & ribs.  A busted wrist (with a pending surgical procedure to insert a screw as it was a bad type of break) as well as a few cracked ribs.  The dude is sore and bummed as he was just getting his cycling legs going good but despite the setback, he's in relatively good spirits
and looking ahead to see what's on the cycling calendar.

Nice work gents and best wishes to JR for a speedy recovery.

Black Fly 2011 Results

Awesome turnout by the Ommegangsters at the 2011 edition of the Black Fly Challenge.  Lots of stories and story within the story aspects but we'll cut to the chase.

Bottom line:   Tim O - 1st in division, Ray F - 2nd in division, Fred H - 2nd in division, Jason H - 3rd in division .. and that's just the podium.  Lots of top 5 and top 10 all around with 4 of the top 10 overall spots being Ommegangsters.

Full Moon Vista Genesee Vally Park Crit - Race Report

From Eric G ... race report from last Friday eve.

As usual is was a very well run and organized event hosted by Full Moon Vista that is part of their Grand Prix of Cycling weekend. The race was a combined P/1/2/3 field with separate scoring for the CAT 3's.  The park had smooth roads with a few tight turns and Mother Nature offered us perfect summer conditions for an evening race.  The strong field set a fast pace that shed riders of the back one by one seemingly every lap.  The average speed of 28 mph was driven by a battle between Mt. Borah/Minerva Design and MVP Healthcare. Numerous breaks were attempted off the front but the fast pace and strong field made the breaks seemingly impossible.  Finally, MVP Healthcare rider Andy L was able to time a move that quickly got a sizeable gap on the remaining field of 20 riders.  Most of the field, myself included, didn't even know Andy had escaped off the front.  With a rider off the front the rest of the MVP boys were content to sit in and get ready for the field sprint while Mt Borah/Minerva Design and the rest of the field drove the pace to try to bring back Andy.  The final lap saw Embrocation Cycling Journal rider Cory B drive to the front at a pace that put the field at it's limit.  The final corner was your typical last corner crit madness with the most aggressive riders gaining the prime positions for the final sprint.  Unfortunately for me I did not get one of the prime positions and had to move through the field in my final sprint to the line to salvage 8th place for the Pro1/2, but more importantly I won 1st place for the Cat 3's.  MVP rider Andy L held off the field for the win while his MVP teammate Ryan N won the field sprint for 2nd place.  It was a great event that ended with a nice result for Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle.

Congrats to Eric & nice to see him hold his own against some of the big dogs.

Killington: 27 + 4 + 9 = 7

Ommegangster Dan the Plan rolled up to Vermont for the Killington Stage Race over this past Memorial Day weekend.  Seems Dan has an affinity for these stage races as well as an affinity to typically do quite well.

So how does 27 + 4 + 9 = 7?  Take a crit and finish on the same time as the main group; pop in a bit of a TT the next day with a 4th out of 50+; and finsih it off with a strong road race for 9th and you get a GC spot of 7th out of more than 40.  Pretty awesome weekend -- Congrats Dan.

Race 4 Hope

Memorial weekend found a few Ommegangsters headed to Borodino just a bit south of Skaneatles for the Race 4 Hope.  This has become a favourite of the CNY race gang as a shorter but reasonably challenging race for a great cause.

At the start Aaron J, Jim R and Drummroll lined up in the Ommegang colors in a light sprinkle.  The neutral start was a little more mellow this yr (vs. the 25+ mph last yr) and the race more or less eased into the flow.  The first hill shed a good number of folks and then the rollers saw a few attacks try with little success.  It was about this point the sun came out and it turned into awesome weather.  Sunshine aside, the eventual "big" climb of the day came into view and the selection began.  Aaron J looked strong with the front pack while Drummroll was sandwiched between the leaders and a few chasers that included Jim R.  Once over the hill, it was pretty much downhill all the way to the finish.  Drummroll got picked up by a few chasers that included Jim R and a couple others just a couple miles from the finish.

Shortly after Aaron J finished 5th overall, the sprint was on in the chase group with Jim R getting 9th and Drummroll 10th.  When age group awards were handed out, all 3 Ommegangsters walked away with a top 3 or better.

All in all a really great event.  Put it on your calendar for next year if you are in town for the weekend.

A Weekend in Syracuse - Best Ever?

Perhaps the best "results" weekend ever for Team Ommegang - Syracuse Bicycle.

A good number of the Ommegangsters participated in the Tour de Syracuse (TdS) while a few with an apparent affinity to being covered in mud participated in the Highland Hex (H6).  Lots of interesting war stories and individual race recaps from the weekend as  The TdS included a crit, a TT and a road race while the H6 was "simply" 6 hours of MTBing.

When the weekend was over, the team had accumulated something like 9 podium spots, 4 wins, lots of great placings in some big/tough fields and especially cool was the extraordinary representation.

Special props to Eric G, David B, and Tim O for their wins in their respective divisions and a big thanks to all the 'gangsters that got out there to represent.

Congrats in order to some of the Ommegangster friends as well for some great results this weekend.

Ramblin Men

A batch of Ommegangsters headed to the outback of Prattsburgh for the Ramble Around Prattsburgh last weekend.  This race has been growing in popularity since inception several years ago and has been described as a shorter yet rougher version of the Black-Fly.  Some of the boys go with a MTB set-up, other with the CX rig.
When the dust settled ... actually there probably was no dust as it was rainy, cold and by some accounts, pretty miserable .... so when the race was completed, we saw some Team Ommegang - Syracuse Bicycle podium action.  King Karl on the top step in his division and Jason H taking third in his.  A good showing by the other guys (including "K" and Joe Mag) with some tough breaks for Cory P who was probably rolling to a top 10 if not for 3 (yes three) flats.
Congrats on the podium guys and nice representation all around.

Bristol -- NYS RR Champs

A handful of Ommegangsters headed out just south of the Rochetser area for a little NYS Road Race Champs action.  About a half dozen made the trip with pretty good representation across the various categories.  Unfortunately we were shut out of any podium action but a couple came pretty close with a few top 10's.

Props again to 'gangster friend Randy H for his win in the Cat 4 group.  (The good news for the Cat 4 guys is that if Randy keeps placing like he has, he will be a Cat 3 soon if not already).

Bristol -- NYS RR Champs results here:

It seems like springtime may have finally shut the door on the last remnants of winter as we're noting more short sleeves showing those awkwardly pale white arms draped over the handlebars around town.  Another sure sign the weather has turned is the increasing number of tri bikes showing up at Syracuse Bicycle for tune-ups & repair.  And the definite sure sign it is getting warmer, trying to match what's cooking on the grill with the proper Ommegang recovery beverage!

Get out your sunscreen and get out there and ride.  Seems like a fairly quiet race weekend coming up with Syracuse & the Highland Hex looming a little over a week away.

Hollenbecks

Ahhh finally, a beautiful weekend with perfect temps for an early season bike race.  It was nice to get home post race and not have to thaw out for a change or clean the road grit outta your teeth from road spray.  Hollenbecks again proves to be a great race with some sizeable fields while still providing a bit of a grass roots kind of feel.

Representation by the Ommegangsters across the categories was stellar again this past weekend.  Good numbers of the Belgian-style brigade in most categories (well, men's categories).  Lots of top 10's with top honors and props to Eric K (aka the Mad Minnesotian) for a podium spot in the 3/4 race.

Results for Hollenbecks are here:  http://flcycling.org/?page_id=2101&cpage=1

Other developments include some 'gangsters looking at the state champs at Bristol this weekend, a few more looking at the Prattsburgh Ramble (perhaps a Black Fly prelude) the following weekend, and then Syracuse and/or the Highland Hex the weekend after.  Also some prelim discussions on the tentative "fun ride" from Syracuse Bicycle to Brewery Ommegang in August.  If you got ideas or suggestions (including a clever name for the ride/event) ... or want to roll up your sleeves and get involved in the planning, please let us know.

Get out there & be safe.

TVC Bingo Recap

Yet again the wind made it's presence felt this weekend at the TVC Binghamton Circuit Race on Saturday.  For the Ommegangsters that had a few miles on the course from previous editions, they quickly realised that the wind was different this go-round -- it was more of a southeasterly wind than the usual west wind.  Rather than the usual strength sapping headwind along the bottom straight, this year it was in your face at the top straight and pushing you around on the decent down around the corner as you headed into the bottom straight.  The weather however was it's typical schizophrenic self with a little rain, almost some sun, more clouds and so forth throughout the various events.

For the Ommegangsters, there seems that there was representation in all the men's fields (with the exception of the juniors -- umm yes, a brewery sponsor & juniors probably not a good idea to mix the two).  Results wise it was a pretty decent day with a few guys making the podium (first podium for Dave M?) in their respective divisions and definitely some notable placings (like the 'gangsters in the Cat 1/2/3 field).

Full results here:  http://www.bikereg.com/Results/2011/04/23-Binghamton-Circuit-Race.asp (Plz note that it  looks like the couple of guys who did not pre-reg ended up being listed on Team SCARR).

Did Someone Say Windy? Bloomfield & Check Your Legs Reports

Some went easterly, some westerly.  The wind was all over the place.

This past Sunday a good number of Ommegangsters got in some early season race action at either the GVCC's Bloomfield Classic or the the Check Your Legs RR.  All post race banter from both events seemed to mention the brisk temps and the extremely windy conditions.  When it all was over, some decent results and representation across the various categories with a number of 'gangsters posting some top 10 results.

Big congrats go to Ommegangsters Ray W and Aaron J for stepping up on the podium in their class for a respective 2nd and 3rd place.

(Also props to 'gangster friends Randy H and Wayne B for their wins.)

Big Gig at Brewery Ommegang

You should check this out.  It's a Friday eve so there goes that excuse.  If you're not sure who Levon is, do yourself a favor and do a search.  You will almost undoubtedly know stuff he has been involved with as a soloist as well as a member of The Band.  The Band had a long association with Bob Dylan and also played with the who's who of the 60's & 70's scene including the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, the Allman Bros, etc.  Still not sure?  Ever hear "Up on Cripple Creek" or "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"?  Thought so!

For additional info, check out the Brewery Ommegang Website:   http://www.ommegang.com/?event_view_id=249&event_view=2011-05-13&mcat=3&scat=0

Look forward to seeing ya there!

ChiliMan Crowned

ChiliMan Podium (well, sorta)

To spice up the winter training blues, a somewhat "out there" throw down challenge was presented to the local cyclists who ride all winter and might consider throwing on a pair of running shoes on occasion.  The "challenge" included an informal group bike ride for 1.5 to 2 hrs followed by running in the Chilly Chili 5k right after.  The first person who (having rode earlier) to post the fastest 5k time would be crowned the "CHILIMAN".
So, at about 9:45 am this past Sunday (Jan 24), a few brave souls began filing into the Caz High parking lot for the unofficial ChiliMan Challenge. Temps were single digits with a slight, yet sharp wind from the north.  There were a few laughs as the ChiliMan challengers compared their options and techniques for staying warm (or at least trying on some level).  Needless to say, it did not look like a mid-July club ride.  There were downhill ski helmets, Carhartts, duct tape, goggles, all sorts of mittens/gloves/over-mitts/liners, hand warmers, toe warmers, hats, face masks, balaclavas, neck gaiters, and general layers of this, that & you name it.  It looked like part mountaineering expedition, part bike ride and all just a bit questionable from a sanity stand point.
The ride headed south out of Caz with 5 "official" ChiliMan candidates and a sixth rider who, well, was just looking for more saddle time having already been out for a while.  Once to New Woodstock, we turned east towards Erieville over the rollers and then were rudely reminded that there was a north wind as we zig-zagged north & west back towards Caz.  The irony was you wanted to push the pace a little to get the furnace going and produce some body heat while on the other hand, each mph faster hurt exponentially as the wind was downright painful in its bite.
We rolled back into Caz after about an hour & 50 minutes with most sporting frosty eye lashes and/or other frosted facial hair or face coverings.  We started the process of changing from "ice-cyclists" to runners and refueled with munchies & liquids.
We lined up for the Chilly Chili 5K and wiggled, jumped, and fidgeted all over trying to stay warm like the entire crowd.  The gun went off and the runners went sweeping through downtown and then northward up what seemed like all gradual uphill for the first 2 miles - with a bit of a kicker in there as well.  When the dust (or frost) settled, the first ChiliMan challenger to cross the line was Randy H.  Many of us who know Randy realize he's a pretty strong cyclist but he isn't exactly a slouch of a runner.  The dude finished 9th overall .. like 9th of 800+ entrants.  And it's probably quite reasonable to assume that not many of the folks he was racing on the front end of it all had just ridden for nearly 2 hours.
With his first place in the ChiliMan Challenge, Randy was ceremoniously presented with a 750 ml bottle of Belgian style recovery beverage (aka Three Philosophers) and the coveted ChiliMan Talisman/necklace.  Second went to Team Ommegang - Syracuse Bicycle newcomer Dave B who was top 30 overall.  With second, Dave claimed the "single-serve" size of a Three Philosophers.  Third was presented to Skinny Phil  but a protest by Jeremy B indicated he did actually finish 3rd.  Actually he didn't protest, we just couldn't find him after the race until we had already had the awards "ceremony".  (So Skinny Phil owes Jeremy a PBR pounder.)  Lantern Rouge honors went to Drummroll whos legs and knees simply wondered why.  While uncertain of Dave's and Randy's pre-race prep, Skinny Phil was on the bike Sat am for some decent saddle time on the backroads while Jeremy B and Drummroll were spotted at Highland at a snowshoe race the day before.
So the first ChiliMan challenge is in the books.  No frostbite, no flats, two snowplows, and lots of makin the best of what's out the door here in CNY.
